Training Camp News and Updates for Fantasy Football: Emeka Egbuka Injury, Giants' RB Room and More

With the NFL season approaching, fantasy football drafters need to be on top of the latest updates out of training camp. Matt LaMarca highlights several news items affecting fantasy-relevant players.

We’re another day closer to the start of the NFL season, and with it, fantasy football. In fact, we’ve got a big slate of preseason games slated for Thursday, which means it was a relatively slow day from a news perspective. That said, there were still a few tasty nuggets for us to digest.

Training Camp News and Updates for Fantasy Football

Injuries are the worst part of training camp, and Emeka Egbuka limped off the field with a toe injury on Wednesday. He was examined on the sidelines by the trainers before ultimately sitting out the rest of the day.

Hopefully, we’ll get some good news regarding this situation in the near future. The early reports seem to suggest that it isn’t particularly serious, and the Bucs were simply being cautious with the 2025 first-round pick.

As long as Egbuka is able to return quickly, he appears poised for a big second season. He got off to an electric start last year before getting injured and hitting the “rookie wall,” but with Mike Evans now in San Francisco, the coast is clear for Egbuka to assume the WR1 role in Tampa Bay. His target share jumped 10% when Evans was sidelined last year, increasing from 18.5% to 28.5%.

Egbuka’s early production also seems more indicative of what we can expect moving forward. Egbuka suffered a hamstring injury in Week 6 that clearly impacted his athleticism. Per ESPN’s Ben Solak, Egbuka had 11 routes where he ran at least 18 miles per hour in the first five weeks of the year, and he had just 11 such routes in the final 12 weeks following his hamstring injury. Add in better health from quarterback Baker Mayfield, and Egbuka checks all the boxes for a potential breakout. He’s currently ranked as our consensus WR16, but it should shock no one if he finishes inside the top 10.

KC_chiefs-logo.svg Rashee Rice Not Expected to Face Suspension

This echoes what Andy Reid has already expressed about Rashee Rice, but it’s good to get further confirmation. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Rice is not expected to face discipline from the league after a probation violation that cost him 30 days in jail.

If Rice can stay on the field for a full 17 games this season, the sky is the limit. He was fifth at the position in 0.5-PPR points per game last year, and he posted a 29% target share when he was able to suit up. With Travis Kelce set to turn 37 years old this seasonand Xavier Worthy yet to truly break outthere is no question about who the top pass catcher in Kansas City is. He’s currently coming off the board as WR11 across the industry, but that figure could rise following Rapoport’s latest report.

NYG_giants-logo.svg Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy Committee?

Reading into depth charts in August is typically a fool’s errand, but this one caught my eye out of Giants’ camp:

Cam Skattebo is currently being drafted as the clear top RB in New York, with a consensus fantasy football ADP of 42.1 across the fantasy landscape. That puts him at RB18, sandwiching him between Javonte Williams and Travis Etienne.

Skattebo was impressive as a rookie, and he was RB6 for fantasy purposes from Weeks 2 through 8. He handled only 53% of the Giants’ carries during that stretch, but he made up for it with a 14% target share and 21% TPRR.

If Skattebo is going to lose some work to Tyrone Tracy this seasonparticularly on passing downsit’s going to be tough for him to justify his current price tag. Our rankers are a bit split on Skattebo. Matthew Freedman has him at No. 55 overall, making him significantly overpriced according to his rankings, but both Dwain McFarland and Alex Cupps have him at 39th overall. I tend to think the downside outweighs the upside.

NYJ_jets-logo.svg Adonai Mitchell Continues to Impress

Adonai Mitchell was one of the stars of the Jets’ offseason program, and he has seemingly carried that into training camp. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the team is expecting a “sizable jump” from him this season.

Mitchell ultimately had an 84% route participation, 25% target share, and 301 receiving yards in eight games as a Jet last season. However, that production did come with Garrett Wilson out of the picture. It’s hard to imagine him matching that level of output with Wilson in the picture, especially with the team adding two first-round pass catchers during the NFL Draft (Kenyon Sadiq and Omar Cooper). Mitchell will likely put together some spike weeks, but he’s going to be tough to trust on a weekly basis.

ATL_falcons-logo.svg Tua Tagovailoa to Start First Preseason Game

The Falcons have yet to officially name Tua Tagovailoa their regular-season starter, but it seems like an inevitability at this point. Michael Penix is still recovering from the ACL injury he suffered last year, and the latest reports suggest he could miss a few more weeks. Tagovailoa has gotten all of the first-team reps in his absence, and he’ll draw the start Friday vs. the Broncos.

The starters are only expected to get a series or 10 plays, but it’s another opportunity for Tagovailoa to cement himself atop the depth chart. That said, neither Falcons quarterback is really relevant for fantasy purposes, except in superflex and best ball formats.
